FEATHER AND FUR SMUDGE FAN

Generally, I don't really condone the use of animal fur because of the way they are collected, but I recently rescued a silver fox vest from a thrift store...better to use it in ritual items than to have someone wear it as indulgent fashion. But then again, I could even go as far to say as this use can also be considered rather indulgent, but perhaps the lesser of 2 evils (for lack of a better term) for all intents and purposes. Using it to add the animals essence/power, not wearing for fashions sake at the expense of the animal. A very debatable view either way, I am sure.

This is a smudge fan I made for cleansing rituals. All the items used to make it were either found in nature, recycled or, as in the case of the fur, purchased.

The fan itself is made from pheasant feathers I collected from a hawks kill remains, there are two parts of wild turkey tail feathers I found in a harvested corn field, a single white swans feather found at a nearby lake, a piece of driftwood I found at the beach last summer, an old iridescent brooch cabochon part from a yard sale, and of course, the silver fox fur.

Total length: 13 inches from feather tip to handle end.

The driftwood handle is a rather interesting piece in itself, in that if you look at the back of the fan, the wood looks to form a skull like shape like a deer or dragons skull. I thought this was a rather interesting find.

My old fan was rather ratty from many, many years of use, so, nature and the thrift store provided me with a new one. All I added was the creative vision and a bit of myself to bring it to life.
